I really enjoyed the first two episodes of new SBS rom-com Dynamite Kiss. It’s a zippy cocktail of fun and romance with an interesting set of events leading to our main story and our couple’s conundrum.
Go Da Rim (Ahn Eun Jin) is a single woman who is preparing for civil services exams for a few years but hasn’t been able to succeed. She has not been successful in interviews as well because of lack of confidence and the complex due to her education from a lesser known college. Circumstances lead her to meet Gong Ji Hyeok (Jang Ki Yong) in Jeju Island. They both feel attracted towards each other and they even kiss and make out but just before taking the next step, she has to run back to Seoul when she gets a call about her mother getting a heart attack. This is like a Cinderella setting as our hero has no clue where she went and why. He tries to find her but fails to do so. Meanwhile, she is in desperate need of money for her mother’s treatment and other reasons, and this leads her to disguise as a married mother to land a job, only to find out that Ji Hyeok is her boss.

This plot will be followed by misunderstandings, leading to funny, romantic and angsty shenanigans. The two episodes did a great job in establishing the initial background and raising the anticipation about the leads’ dynamics now that he thinks she is married and she won’t be able to tell him the truth — all the while both being attracted to each other. Usually I’m not a fan of fast burn romance but it works here as it was not exactly love at first sight; the hero gradually falls for her even though the timeline was very short. But the drama’s title is literally Dynamic Kiss and we are told in the beginning how one kiss can lead to finding that One person for you. It also helps that the OTP’s interactions are a mix of banter, support and cuteness and they are laced with amazing chemistry between Ahn Eun Jin and Jang Ki Yong. I like both the main leads individually as well. She suffers from lack of confidence but she can be sassy and is hard working and caring. He has a kind heart too and is funny and cheeky.
I’m also looking forward to the inevitable office antics, how this team of mothers ends up absolutely crushing it at work. I also like the heorine’s friend and neighbor Kim Seon U (Kim Mu Jun) — his hairstyle reminds me of Gong Yoo in Coffee Prince — he is so sweet and I hope there is no love triangle. I’m low key looking forward to his own love story with Ji Hyeok’s fiancée, played by Woo Da Vi.

The show is full of heartless cheabol family members like Ji Hyeok’s father and sister, as well as his fiancée’s parents. Same goes for Da Rim’s sister. I gave major eye roll when their scenes were shown. There is also some bit of suspension of disbelief required. For example, Ji Hyeok did not even take her contact details when they were spending so much time together! He did not click a single photo! LOL. But the drama definitely feels like the classic rom-com Kdramas that made me fall in love with the world of Korean dramas, despite some over-the-top bits.
All in all, with its lively pacing, magnetic leads, and a setup full of comedic misunderstandings and heartfelt moments, Dynamite Kiss delivers a fun start that left me eager for more.
