I’m looking forward to new MBC drama Chief Detective 1958. It is a prequel to a very old and popular classic Kdrama Chief Inspector that aired from 1971-1989. It even garnered 70 percent ratings during its run time — which sounds so impossible in this day and age.

Chief Detective 1958 is a police investigation drama set in the year 1958 (natch) and tells the story of a passionate detective, played by Lee Je Hoon (Taxi Driver), who specializes in arresting petty thieves. He is the younger counterpart of the lead character in the original version. Here he teams up with three other colleagues to fight corruption using determination, common sense and tenacity.  The technology wasn’t as advanced during that era as it’s now. There was no mobile phone or computer or CCTV or profiling and so many other things. It makes for an interesting viewing.

The three colleagues are played by Lee Dong Hwi (Big Bet), Choi Woo Sung (My Roommate Is A Gumiho) and Yoon Hyun Soo (Seasons of Blossom). Seo Eun Soo (Unlock My Boss) plays the knowledgeable owner of a bookstore and Lee Je Hoon’s love interest.

The lead actor in the original show, Choi Bool Am, will have a cameo in the drama! He will play a special appearance as an elderly version of the titular detective.

Chief Detective 1958 is helmed by Kim Sung Hoon, who has directed movies like Confidential Assignment (2017) and Rampant (2018). The drama will air in the slot of Fridays and Saturdays.

Bring on the retro vibes!
