The Price Of Confession is a gripping psychological thriller that centers around two women. It is a complex tale of suspicion, desperation and survival, and is fueled with powerful acting across the board.

ABOUT

An Yun Su (Jeon Do Yeon) is accused of murdering her husband and is sent to prison. There, a dangerous convict Mo Eun (Kim Go Eun) makes a proposal — she would confess for the crime and in return, Yun Su has to murder someone else.

REVIEW

The Price Of Confession is basically a whodunnit that keeps you on your toes with its twists and turns; but the show also works as a solid character-driven story. It’s not a twist-for-the-sake-of-it whodunnit—the show takes its time building real, flawed characters. The investigation pulls you in, but the character depth is what keeps you invested.

The drama gradually unfolds its tale — and the reveals never seem out of the blue or over-the-top, as can be the case in mysteries sometimes. Watching this drama feels like driving through fog with the headlights off. Each scene pulls you deeper, keeping your nerves buzzing until the very last moment.

The show places you right beside the protagonist Yun Su, sharing every step of her doubts, struggle and survival. Yet even as you root for her, it quietly asks: can you trust her completely? Jeon Do Yeon plays the role effortlessly and naturally, in a subtle manner. The character itself is unconventional — she doesn’t react like normal people would in certain situations, which can also be attributed to her being from art world, sort of like a bohemian person.

Then there is Mo Eun — so cold and creepy in her demeanor. Kim Go Eun delivers such an amazing and nuanced performance — you see her emotions even when you feel the character is devoid of any emotion. She starts off as an enigma but our understanding of her grows slowly and naturally, piece by piece. She is so confident and fearless — and yet believable.

Other characters include Baek Dong Hun (Park Hae Soo) who is the main prosecutor in the case. I did not like him much as he was completely biased since the beginning and probably that was the intention of the show. Jin Seon Kyu plays Jang Jeong Gu, who is Yun Su’s lawyer. Some characters stand out as especially authentic and lived-in, like Yun Su’s probation officer Bae Sun Deok, played perfectly by Lee Sang Hee.

In addition to the thrills, the show comes with emotional and tragic stories for some characters. The drama also has some chilly moments. It could have been shorter but that’s true for most Kdramas. I also think the protagonists act recklessly at some places.

IN A NUTSHELL

An atmospheric and dark psychological thriller that balances a gripping mystery with layered characters and powerful performances.

MY RATING: 9 out of 10.
