Marry My Husband is a truly entertaining show. There is never a dull moment — but it also becomes tiring towards the tail end because of it. Although — kudos for juxtaposing over-the-top scenarios with quiet, introspective moments.

ABOUT

Kang Ji Won (Park Min Young) is suffering from terminal illness. When she finds out that her husband Park Min Hwan (Lee Yi Kyung) is having an affair with her best friend Jeong Su Min (Song Ha Yoon), she is murdered by him. She is then transported 10 years back into the past. She decides to change her fate through this miraculous opportunity.

REVIEW

The drama is immensely entertaining where interesting things keep happening one after the other. The story is surely unrealistic but thankfully, the show balances its outrageous arcs with a sweet, grounded romance and certain thoughtful plotlines and moments.

Witnessing Ji Won’s journey where she finds confidence, courage and growth is truly satisfying. The way she achieves her goal step-by-step is thrilling to watch. I did get annoyed at times when she would not break up with Min Hwan even when it seemed easier to do so. I loved how she was one step ahead of the antagonists. I also enjoyed the way she tries to understand the rules of her time travel. Park Min Young delivers a fabulous performance.

The love story of Ji Won and her boss Yoo Ji Hyeok (Na In Woo) is one of the key highlights of Marry My Husband. It’s beautifully written and is a real slow burn. We see their past relation gradually unfold — from the first meeting to where they are in the present. Or rather past. Ji Hyeok is a really supportive and understanding guy. Na In Woo and Park Min Young have a winning chemistry. Na In Woo in in very good form and gives an impressive performance.

SPOILER: I find it really interesting how the drama has two of the characters travel back in time and this reveal was unexpected as well as amazing. I simply loved that moment when both Ji Won and Ji Hyeok realise it together that they are from the future — through a BTS song! LOL. Many points for being creative and amusing. SPOILER ENDS

The show has many fun characters including the villains. The bad guys are completely evil, with not even an iota of redeeming qualities. But they are not one dimensional. Lee Yi Kyung does an amazing job of bringing comedy and villainy to his role. Song Ha Yoon nails it in her role of a manipulative woman who is outwardly sweet but is full of bitterness in her heart. The way she instantly changes expressions for Su Min — excellent performance.

I also enjoyed multiple couples and love stories — the main couple, chef Baek Eun Ho (Lee Ki Kwang) & cute Yoo Hee Yeon (Choi Gyu Ri), and the unexpected but sweet romance between Lee Suk Joon (Ha Do Kwon) and Yang Ju Ran (Gong Min Jung).

Despite having a truly torturous experience with people like Su Min and Min Hwan, Ji Won can still believe in the goodness of people as she forms new relationships that are so wholesome. Like with Ji Hyeok, and with Ju Ran and Hee Yeon — I loved their friendship!

THE MINUS POINTS

The drama has the common problem that so many other shows suffer from — being too long. In last few episodes, it felt like things just kept happening without any pause. It also becomes exhausting in this case because the show has the premise of outrageous plotlines. I wish the drama gave more screen time to the romance story of Baek Eun Ho and Yoo Hee Yeon — they are adorable and had lots of potential. But the drama spends that time on unnecessary third villain in the form of Yura, who arrives in the third act and has an annoying, boring plot and character. I also think the show dragged the union of the OTP without giving proper explanations of Ji Won’s thinking. It felt like going in circles.

IN A NUTSHELL

Marry My Husband is a compelling show that provides perfect cocktail of time travel, romance, fun and drama. But it becomes exhausting in the last few episodes with its never-ending shenanigans.

MY RATING: 8 out of 10
