June is bringing lots and lots of new Korean dramas. There is a huge range of genres to choose from — comedy, romance, horror, thriller, drama — with a few dramas being based on webtoons and novels. It is surprising (pleasantly) that there is no legal drama in this list.

Find out the details here:

King The Land

Premiere Date: June 17

Network: JTBC, Netflix

Stars: Lee Jun Ho (The Red Sleeve), Yoona (Big Mouth)

Slot: Saturday & Sunday

Number Of Episodes: 16

Genre: Comedy, Romance

Synopsis: Love story between a rich man who can’t stand fake smiles and a woman who works under him and has a bright personality and a smiling face.

Thoughts: The plot sounds like a standard rom-com of opposites attract trope. But I’m always a sucker for classic romance stories if they have great chemistry and enough romantic hijinks to make me smile from ear to ear.

See You In My 19th Life

Premiere Date: June

Network: tvN, Netflix

Stars: Shin Hye Sun (Mr. Queen), Ahn Bo Hyun (Yumi’s Cells)

Slot: Saturday & Sunday

Number Of Episodes: 12

Genre: Mystery, Fantasy, Romance

Synopsis: A woman who remembers all her past lives gets reincarnated repeatedly and in her 19th life, she wants to find the man who she met in her 18th life.

Thoughts: I love Shin Hye Sun who is always such a delight to watch. The show is based on a webtoon and the plot sounds really interesting.

Bloodhounds

Premiere Date: June 9

Network: Netflix

Stars: Woo Do Hwan (Joseon Attorney), Lee Sang Yi (Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha), Park Sung Woong (Life On Mars)

Slot: All episodes released together.

Number Of Episodes: 16

Genre: Action, Thriller, Crime

Synopsis: Two former boxing rivals end up working together for a loan shark.

Thoughts: It sounds very different from typical Kdramas. It is based on a webtoon and has a solid cast. It is penned by the director of movies like Midnight Runners (2017) and The Divine Fury (2019), so it adds to its attraction.

Lies Hidden In My Garden/ House With A Yard

Premiere Date: June 19

Network: ENA

Stars: Kim Tae Hee (Hi Bye, Mama!), Kim Sung Oh (Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area), Im Ji Yeon (The Glory)

Slot: Monday & Tuesday

Number Of Episodes: 8

Genre: Mystery, Thriller

Synopsis: A woman lives a perfect life with her husband and son. One day, she notices a strange smell in her backyard that turns her life upside down. The investigation leads to her meeting a woman who suffers from domestic violence.

Thoughts: I’m looking forward to this one a lot as mystery thrillers with females as main leads is one of my favourite settings. The story sounds intriguing too. This is based on a 2018 novel.

Revenant

Premiere Date: June 23

Network: SBS

Stars:  Kim Tae Ri (Twenty-Five Twenty-One), Oh Jung Se (It’s Okay to Not Be Okay), Hong Kyung (Weak Hero Class 1)

Slot: Friday & Saturday

Number Of Episodes: 12

Genre: Mystery, Thriller, Horror

Synopsis: A woman who gets possessed by an evil spirit joins hands with a man who can see those evil spirits to investigate mysterious deaths surrounding five divine objects.

Thoughts:  This sounds so intriguing. Horror Kdramas are not very common. It is one of my favorite genres — so that makes it a must watch for me. This amazing cast + writer of shows like Signal and Kingdom — a fabulous combination!

Numbers

Premiere Date: June 23

Network: MBC

Stars:  L/ Kim Myung Soo (Secret Royal Inspector), Choi Jin Hyuk (Rugal), Yeon Woo (The Golden Spoon), Choi Min Soo (Lawless Lawyer)

Slot: Friday & Saturday

Number Of Episodes: 12

Genre: Crime, Drama

Synopsis: An employee who works at a reputed accounting firm, the only person there without a college degree, fights for justice against all odds at the firm.

Thoughts: I’m interested in underdog stories but the cast doesn’t interest me much. I might give it a try if I read good things about it.

Mrs. Durian/ Lady Durian

Premiere Date: June 24

Network: TV Chosun

Stars: Park Joo Mi (Love (ft. Marriage and Divorce)), Kim Min Joon (Was It Love?),
Choi Myung Gil (Red Shoes)

Slot: Saturday & Sunday

Number Of Episodes: 16

Genre: Fantasy, Melodrama

Synopsis: Two noble women from the Joseon dynasty time travel to 2023 and get entangled with two men.

Thoughts: A fantasy laced melodrama is definitely something new in dramaland. And I like the idea of two characters traveling through time. But it might be too makjang for me, given the fact that the writer has penned shows like Apgujeong Midnight Sun and Princess Aurora.

Heartbeat

Premiere Date: June 26

Network: KBS

Stars: Taecyeon (Blind), Won Ji An (If You Wish Upon Me)

Slot: Monday & Tuesday

Number Of Episodes: 16

Genre: Mystery, Fantasy, Romance

Synopsis: Love story between a character who is half-human and half-vampire and who misses his chance to become human, and a cold-hearted woman, who somehow end up living together.

Thoughts: Cohabitation hijinks with added layer of fantasy? Sign me up!

Celebrity

Premiere Date: June 30

Network: Netflix

Stars: Park Gyu Young (Dali And Cocky Prince), Kang Min Hyuk (Oh! Master), Lee Chung Ah (Awaken), Lee Dong Gun (Leverage)

Slot: All episodes released together.

Number Of Episodes: 12

Genre: Mystery, Thriller

Synopsis: A social media influencer encounters the ugly side of the glamorous world of celebrities.

Thoughts: Color me intrigued. There have been many shows on celeb life, rom-coms or dramatic/realistic. So I’m looking forward to the take this drama has on it. The cast looks good too. It’s interesting that the writer has penned only sageuks in last few years (Horse Doctor, Haechi, Hwajung).

Miracle Brothers

Premiere Date: June 28

Network: JTBC

Stars: Jung Woo (Mental Coach Jegal), Bae Hyun Sung (Gaus Electronics)

Slot: Wednesday & Thursday

Number Of Episodes: 10

Genre: Mystery, Drama, Fantasy

Synopsis: The life of an aspiring writer with lots of debt turns upside down when he meets a mysterious boy suffering from amnesia but with special ability to feel the pain and despair of others and read their minds.

Thoughts: The premise sounds good as it adds fantasy to a plot about healing. The writer has written many popular dramas like Devil, Memory and Shark.

The Villain of Romance

Premiere Date: June 5

Network: MBC Dramanet

Stars: Baro/ Cha Sun Woo (It Was Spring), Ha Seung Ri (All of Us Are Dead)

Slot: Monday & Tuesday

Number Of Episodes: 10

Genre: Romance, College

Synopsis: A female college student decides to put a younger fellow student under intense “training” as they start dating.

Thoughts: Although I love college campus love stories, this nothing interests me here, be it the plot or the cast.
