May is here! This month is a bit lighter on new releases, giving you the perfect chance to catch up on dramas you’ve missed. Still, there are some exciting K-dramas premiering—many with a fantasy twist. Let’s take a look at what’s coming up:
My Royal Nemesis

Premiere Date: May 8
Network: SBS
Stars: Im Ji Yeon (The Tale Of Lady Ok), Heo Nam Joon (A Hundred Memories), Jang Seung Jo (As You Stood By)
Slot: Friday & Saturday
Number Of Episodes: 12
Genre: Romance, Comedy, Fantasy
Synopsis: A notorious and dangerous woman from the Joseon era is sentenced to death by poison, but instead of dying, she wakes up in 2026 in the body of a little-known actress. Meanwhile, the arrogant and ill-mannered sole heir of a powerful conglomerate crosses paths with her when she unexpectedly confronts him one day.
Thoughts: This looks good and intriguing! Just right up my alley with an ‘enemies to lovers’ trope.
The Legend Of Kitchen Soldier

Premiere Date: May 11
Network: tvN, TVING
Stars: Park Ji Hoon (Weak Hero Class 1), Yoon Kyung Ho (The Trauma Code: Heroes On Call), Han Dong Hee (Captivating The King), Lee Hong Nae (The Uncanny Counter)
Slot: Monday & Tuesday
Number Of Episodes: 12
Genre: Fantasy, Comedy
Synopsis: An army cook’s life changes when a mysterious quest appears before him. As he follows it, he sets off on an unexpected journey that pushes him toward becoming a legendary chef.
Thoughts: The drama seems to have a fresh plot and setting. Personally, I’m not too keen to watch it but objectively, it could be an interesting ride.
The WONDERfools

Premiere Date: May 15
Network: Netflix
Stars: Park Eun Bin (Hyper Knife), Cha Eun Woo (True Beauty), Kim Hae Sook (Mr. Plankton), Choi Dae Hoon (Pro Bono), Im Sung Jae (Law And The City), Son Hyun Joo (The Good Detective)
Slot: All episodes released together
Number Of Episodes: 8
Genre: Comedy, Fantasy, Adventure
Synopsis: Set in 1999, the drama is about a quirky group of small-town locals who unexpectedly gains superpowers and must face a growing threat as panic about the end of the world spreads.
Thoughts: This show sounds fun and reminds me of the time in 1999 when everyone had theories about the new millennium and the end of the world!
Fifties Professionals

Premiere Date: May 22
Network: MBC
Stars: Shin Ha Kyun (The Auditors), Oh Jung Se (We Are All Trying Here), Heo Sung Tae (Adamas)
Slot: Friday & Saturday
Number Of Episodes: 12
Genre: Action, Comedy
Synopsis: Three seemingly ordinary but secretly formidable middle-aged men are pulled back into action by fate. Once at the top of their fields, they now live in exile on a remote island, where they embark on a bittersweet, comedic journey to uncover the truth behind a mysterious event from a decade ago that changed everything.
Thoughts: Color me intrigued! The cast is another big plus here.
Reborn Rookie

Premiere Date: May 30
Network: JTBC
Stars: Lee Joon Young (Melo Movie), Son Hyun Joo (Tracer), Lee Joo Myung (Twenty Five Twenty One), Jeon Hye Jin (Not Others), Jin Goo (The Auditors)
Slot: Saturday & Sunday
Number Of Episodes: 12
Genre: Fantasy, Drama
Synopsis: A self-made business tycoon, known as a legendary figure in the corporate world, has his life turned upside down after an accident causes his soul to switch with that of a young soccer player. Now in a new body, he joins his own company as a rookie employee, beginning an unpredictable journey while carrying his sharp business mind in a completely different life.
Thoughts: What did I say about May being a fantasy month! This drama reminds me of Reborn Rich, what with fantasy and corporate hijinks combo and also, that title! The writer also wrote Reborn Rich. Hopefully, this one is as gripping as that one and has a much better ending.
Azure Spring

Premiere Date: May 11
Network: MBN
Stars: Yeri (Kpop group Red Velvet), Kang Sang Joon (Flex X Cop)
Slot: Monday & Tuesday
Number Of Episodes: 6
Genre: Life, Youth, Drama
Synopsis: A gentle, healing youth story about a young woman paralyzed by fear of what lies ahead and a man unable to let go of his past. As they work as sea divers, they slowly help each other heal and move forward together.
Thoughts: This is surely a breath of fresh air this month with its slice-of-life storyline. That poster looks gorgeous too.
