Spooky In Love is an easy watch that centers around the ‘ghost seer’ trope with some really funny moments and some really dull plotlines. There is romance and some interesting episodic stories but the show loses the fun towards the end. It has all the ingredients for a fun supernatural rom-com, but not all of them come together quite as well as you’d hope.

ABOUT

Park Eun Bin plays a luxury hotel CEO Cheon Yeo Ri, who is also the heiress of one of Korea’s top conglomerates. She has the ability to see ghosts. Yang Se Jong stars as Ma Gang Uk, a prosecutor. They meet at a crime site where she comes to help the ghost of the victim and he is there for his case. Thus starts a sort of partnership that gradually converts into love.

REVIEW

I really enjoyed the starting episodes of the drama. They pack a good cocktail of comedy, engrossing cases, budding friendship of the leads and hints of past events that led to the heroine’s condition. The two protagonists start off on a wrong foot but soon they start to bond, grow closer and eventually their feelings turn romantic. The various ‘case of the day/week’ are interesting and keep you invested. The two main characters are well written. Yeo Ri is strong and self dependent but also has a vulnerable side and is very lonely because of her condition. Her not being able to touch anyone as they would start being haunted is a really great addition to the trope. Gang Uk is a prosecutor with a righteous heart. I love how he is still afraid of the supernatural, a nice juxtaposition against his brave side in other things. He is actually very adorable and unintentionally funny. I loved his friendship and scenes with his two colleagues Pil Dong and Hyung Min. The entire track when Gang Uk is chased by ghosts is extremely funny.

The show then brings a fake engagement plot that feels unnecessary and kind of reduces the romantic momentum that was building up between the leads. In this midst, the show starts bringing corporate hijinks in place of supernatural cases which further reduces the enjoyment. I do think Gang Uk gets too involved in Yeo Ri’s corporate plotline, so much so that it feels like he has forgotten he has his own job too. LOL.

We also start getting more information and pieces of the past events’ puzzle as we move ahead in the series. Ong Sung Woo plays Kang Min Hwan, Yeo Ri’s childhood friend. This character is stereotypical second lead who keeps pushing a romance with female lead despite her having no interest in him.

The chemistry between Park Eun Bin and Yang Se Jong is fine but the drama keeps its romance very chaste. Adding to this the weird angle of fake relationship, the show left me dissatisfied in terms of romance in the end. I did like their interactions for the most part though.

The ending reveal is predictable in hindsight, but the drama does a good job of making you believe otherwise until the very end.

Spooky In Love has good acting performances across the board, the main leads as well as the supporting cast.

IN A NUTSHELL

Spooky In Love is a fun ride for most of its length, with interesting characters and plenty of laughs. But it gradually loses its spark by the end.

MY RATING: 7.5 out of 10.
