On the heels of a hit drama, it’s a movie for Lee Min Ho this time as he has confirmed to star in upcoming action noir film Gangnam Blues. I was hoping that he would sign this when I read initial news about him considering the project from director Yoo Ha who has acclaimed films like Once Upon a Time in High School and A Dirty Carnival under his resume. Heirs was a good choice as far as popularity and hits are concerned but I really want to see him in more challenging roles and different kinds of projects and well, Lee Min Ho and action is something which sounds awesome after he gave a terrific performance in City Hunter. I liked Heirs but not as much as I wanted to and I’m as pleased as Punch to see him trying more serious and dark cinema.
Gangnam Blues will be set in 1970s and takes the story about politics and conspiracies in the real estate development in the area of Gangnam. Nothing much has been described about Lee Min Ho’s role except that his character will have a sad and tragic fate and the film will be full of action scenes. The shooting will start in March next year and plans to release in late 2014. Lee Min Ho is doing back to back dramas since Boys Before Flowers but before that super duper hit drama that sky rocketed him to immense popularity, he appeared in supporting roles for films like Public Enemy Returns and Our School E.T. This will be his first big screen leading role.
I usually watch very few Korean movies after discovering dramas and specifically only rom-coms and for other genres, I prefer Hollywood films. But just for Lee Min Ho, I’m going to try my hand on this dark noir film but it looks like a long journey equivalent to light year till I’ll get the chance to watch it: its release, then availability here and finally the subtitles. Phew.
