Good news for all weekend drama fans out there! KBS is coming up with a brand new show for coloring our weekends with some family warmth, some melodrama and some fun as 15 August marks the premiere of All About My Mom. Well, raise your hands if it reminded you instantly of other dramas of the same slot, All About My Family or What Happens To My Family. Yeah, the title sounds too common but it is also going around with other monikers like I Ask You, Mom and Please Mom. I did enjoy What Happens To My Family for the number of episodes I watched. It was pretty endearing watch but I had to drop it due to lack of time and commitment it required. Anyway, Lee Sang Woo, recently seen as UEE‘s brother in High Society (which actually looked a lot like a weekend drama in terms of production quality), will headline alongside Eugene, who was last seen in JTBC’s Can We Love. This will be her comeback project after taking a small break from dramaland due to her pregnancy. Lee Sang Woo plays an architect while Eugene plays an assistant manager at a fashion design firm. The show basically focuses on the relationship between our heroine and her mother, played by Go Doo Shim (You’re The Best Lee Soon Shin, High Society). They have a love-hate bond but when the daughter gets married to her love, our hero, she has a hard time with her mother-in-law, the role taken up by Kim Mi Sook (City Hunter, Shining Inheritance). She begins to understand her mom for the first time. Oh Min Seok (who was great as assistant manager Kang in Misaeng), Jo Bo Ah (who won many hearts with her charming portrayal in Surplus Princess and she followed that with Missing Noir M), Kim Gab Soo (Marrriage Not Dating) and Choi Tae Joon (one of the cops in Girl Who Sees Smells) costar.
The plot sounds quite standard for a weekend show, and the actors are the ones who mostly act in these dramas as well. One thing interesting is that the writer of All About My Mom has not penned any weekender before, with dramas like Medical Top Team, Brain and God Of Study under the belt. So that definitely makes me hope that things will have more fresh take to them. But I’m not holding my breath. The show will be directed by PD of Gumiho: Tale of the Fox’s Child and Golden Apple. With 50 episodes for its run, All About My Mom is taking over the slot from Bluebird’s House, which is wrapping up this week and has garnered good ratings as well.
I check these long weekenders out from time to time if they have actors I like but I usually end up dropping them after a few episodes. I just can’t with the heavily recycled and convoluted plots. Ugh! If more of them were like Yoo Na’s Street, I might actually finish some of them. 😀
I know right! It looks like they only change names from drama to drama but everything remains the same. Of course, there are some which are better than others. Yes, Yoona’s Street…read so many good things about it! I think I should add it in my plan list 🙂
