Jang Dong Yoon had a breakout role in popular period drama The Tale Of Nokdu (his earlier shows include A Poem A Day, Mr. Sunshine and School 2017) and it’s refreshing to see him in a completely different role and genre with the following series Search. It is a mystery thriller about a special military crew which is sent to find out the truth about mysterious disappearances and deaths in the demilitarized zone (DMZ). Colour me intrigued.
Jang Dong Yoon stars as a military dog handler and sergeant who is awaiting his discharge when he gets the order to join the search mission. Krystal plays a special officer to join the team who is a skilled and intelligent lieutenant. I think it’s a refreshing departure for the actor from her previous bubbly roles (Heirs, Prison Playbook). I have always liked Yoon Park (Age of Youth,What Happens to My Family?) and here he plays an elite officer who is the leader of the special crew. Lee Hyun Wook (Strangers from Hell) plays the deputy team leader and Moon Jung Hee (I’ll Go to You When the Weather Is Nice) rounds out the cast as a reservist who works as a tour guide at the DMZ Memorial Hall. Formerly, the character was heading a special team responsible for counter-terrorism.
It’s interesting to note that both the PD and the writers’ team have previously worked on films. Directing is by Im Dae Woong who has helmed horror/thriller movies like Horror Stories, House of the Disappeared and To Sir With Love. One of the writers, Go Moo has penned movie Musudan (2016) which had a similar theme as Search.
Search is premiering tomorrow on OCN as the new weekend drama with a total of 10 episodes. The show surely sounds fresh in terms of TV dramas even though the premise can be seen in films. Hoping for a thrilling and chilling watch session with this one!
