Shin Hye Sun was lovely in Thirty But Seventeen and it was also the first time that I loved her as I was mostly indifferent to her previous roles as supporting cast member in shows like High School King Of Savvy and She Was Pretty. Adding to that her impressive performance in Forest Of Secrets which I only got to watch this year, she has become one of the actresses whom I’m always excited to see. Her latest drama Mr. Queen just premiered last Saturday on tvN and is off to a strong start with ratings around 8%.

Mr. Queen is a fusion sageuk (historical drama) about a modern day man whose soul gets trapped in the body of the queen in the Joseon dynasty. Basically an amalgamation of time travel and soul swapping (or in this case, only one spirit moving to the other body). Shin Hye Sun plays the titular queen. This is her first historical drama role. Kim Jung Hyun (Crash Landing On You) plays the king, who seems easy and gullible on the outside but is actually a strong and intelligent man. Yoo Min Kyu (Black Dog) and Lee Jae Won (Record Of Youth) play his confidantes while veteran actress Bae Jong Ok (Live) stars as Queen Sunwon who raised the hero with Kim Tae Woo (The Tale of Nokdu) playing her brother.

Like every sageuk, the show will have strong political thread but the main story involving double ‘fish out of water’ scenario of man versus woman and modern versus ancient, I’m sure Mr. Queen packs good dose of humour and amusement. Can’t wait to watch it!

The show is based on a Chinese novel as well as 2015 web series Go Princess Go.
