Dystopia as a genre is not common in Kdramaland. In fact, I don’t recall any show which had this theme. tvN’s new drama The Devil Judge is trying to break new grounds as it’s set in an alternate universe, in a dystopian world, where courtrooms broadcast their trials live for the whole world to see. Something like a reality show.

Ji Sung headlines the drama, playing the titular head judge. He punishes the wrongdoers mercilessly but he hides a secret — it’s unclear whether he is on the side of the right or masking his evilness. The actor’s last drama was Doctor John and I think this role simply fits to the energetic performance he always delivers. Pop group GOT7’s Jinyoung, who has starred in shows like He Is Psychometric and When My Love Blooms, plays an associate judge who is suspicious of the head judge. Kim Min Jung (Mr. Sunshine) is reuniting with Ji Sung as they both worked together in 2007’s drama New Heart. She plays the executive director of a social responsibility foundation and Ji Sung’s rival. Park Gyu Young of It’s Okay To Not Be Okay fame rounds out the cast as a detective.

The Devil Judge is penned by the writer of Ms. Hammurabi (2018), also a legal drama. The series premieres today in the weekend slot, following well-received Mine, which coincidentally starred Ji Sung’s wife, actress Lee Bo Young.
