If you have been reading this blog for few years, you must know that I’m not a huge fan of sageuks (aka historical Kdramas). But there are certainly exceptions to this rule. The new tvN drama Captivating The King is one of those special cases. I like the cast and the synopsis. Plus, it’s also available on Netflix!

It’s basically a love story between a miserable king who suffers from royal and political power struggle and a woman who at first wants a revenge against him but falls in love with him instead. The latter disguises herself as a man to spy for her mission and it’s then that she meets the male lead. Jo Jung Suk (Hospital Playlist) and Shin Se Kyung (Run On) play the lead roles. Both the actors have acted and impressed in multiple historical dramas before (For example, Nokdu Flower and Tree With Deep Roots respectively).

Two of the 4 soldiers from Crash Landing On You (one of the highlights of that drama) star in this show: Lee Shin Young as a a nobleman who admires the female lead and Yang Kyung Won as assistant section chief of the Ministry of Rites. The show also stars Choi Dae Hoon (Curtain Call) as male lead’s older brother, Son Hyun Joo (The Good Detective) as female lead’s father, Jang Young Nam (It’s Okay to Not Be Okay) as the queen and male lead’s mother.

Captivating The King follows Maestra: Strings of Truth on tvN and will air 2 episodes today and then in the slot of Saturdays & Sundays from next week. It is penned by the writer of The Crowned Clown.
