I liked Lee Dong Gun a lot as the sensible husband in one of the underrated but really good rom-coms Sweet 18 which starred Han Ji Hye opposite him. That made me excited for his comeback project Mi Rae’s Choice (2013) but I ended up dropping it, which turned out to be a great decision as the show left everyone angry and frustrated after its run. It was also sad for the cast as the show received very low ratings. Hence, I’m happy to report that he is starring in his next drama and better that the network is tvN, which keeps on churning out one quality project after another. In fact, most of my favourites from last year belonged to the cable channel.

As is the case with most of newly launched dramas these days, this drama, titled Superdaddy Yeol, is also adapted from 2011 webtoon of the same name. Misaeng‘s success has surely contributed to this hot trend. Superdaddy Yeol costars Lee Yoo Ri who garnered lots of popularity for her role in superhit Jang Bo Ri Is Here and she also bagged MBC Daesang for it, which is the top excellence award of the night. The plot centers around a single mom who is the chief of neurosurgery. She has a daughter. One day, she meets with the sudden information that she has terminal disease and has only one year left to live. In order to make sure that her daughter is not alone when she is gone, she sets out to find her first love and turn him into best dad, hence the title of superdad with Lee Dong Gun playing the titular Yeol.

The story sounds cute and fun with the added element of emotional path as the heroine is suffering from a terminal illness. Can there be hope that she is cured in the end? Or the drama will make us cry by ending in bittersweet manner?

Superdaddy Yeol will be helmed by the PD of Marriage Not Dating, so we can hope for a great direction. It is planning for a March premiere as it follows Heart To Heart, which coincidentally was offered to Lee Dong Gun before he turned it down.
