I’ve read a lot about the popularity of period Chinese novel and drama based on it — Bu Bu Jing Xin — and so when I heard that Korea is remaking it into a drama, I was not clueless about the project (as I’m for many other remakes). Weeks and weeks of casting and speculations followed and now we finally have a confirmed cast and a title that went from Moon Lovers to settling on Bobogyungshim: Ryeo. Well, that will be as difficult to use as speaking Korean for me. Well, okay, if I get used to it then fine. Also, there is another translation from Dramabeans which looks far easier — Scarlet Heart: Goryeo.

Bobogyungshim: Ryeo is actually a time travel sageuk in which IU (Producers) stars as a woman from 21st century who travels back in time and finds herself in the Goryeo era. She will meet a large number of princes there, played by so many flower boys right from the veteran Lee Jun Ki (Two Weeks) to rookie like Ji Soo (Angry Mom). Basically, King Taejo of that period had many children and so the princes will be — Lee Jun Ki, Kang Ha Neul (Misaeng), Hong Jong Hyun (Dating Agency Cyrano), Baekhyun (from Kpop group EXO), Nam Joo Hyuk (Who Are You – School ) and Ji Soo. Phew.

The female cast also includes Seohyun of Girls’ Generation fame as a princess of some other kingdom who hides her identity and becomes a gisaeng and Kang Hanna (Miss Korea) as the princess and King Taejo’s eldest daughter.

I have mixed feelings about the slew of actors in the drama. I like Lee Jun Ki a lot and I wish he did a modern drama next after two back to back sageuks (Joseon Gunman and Scholar Who Walks The Night) but well, I can’t complain — more Lee Jun Ki is always a good thing! I love Kang Ha Neul so much. I like IU a lot and I think she definitely has the talent to headline a drama. I like Ji Soo and Hong Jong Hyun and I don’t have any clue about rest of the cast. But overall, I always love a drama or movie with an ensemble cast.

Good thing that 100% pre-production is slowly becoming a trend this year and Bobogyungshim: Ryeo will be completely filmed before it starts airing in September on SBS. It will be directed by the PD of It’s Okay It’s Love and That Winter, The Wind Blows and it’s being adapted by the writer of Cinderella Man and Save The Last Dance For Me.
