First things first — Yay! Lee Min Ho has confirmed his first comeback project, a TV drama, after completing his military service. I’m not too happy about the show itself though. It’s by top writer Kim Eun Sook, and I love the humour in her shows Goblin and Secret Garden. But this is a reunion after the actor and writer did Heirs back in 2013, which despite enjoying and liking a lot when I was watching it, I can agree that it was not a very good drama. Hence, my low excitement. It also does not help that I dropped Descendants Of The Sun and Mr. Sunshine after first few episodes. Anyway, I’m trying to keep an open mind! Kim Go Eun is also reuniting with the writer after Goblin (2016-17). I loved her in her first drama Cheese In The Trap but her character and acting left a lot to be desired in Goblin. But I’m still hoping this complete reunion of actors and writer will give us an interesting and satisfying ride this time. The premise surely sounds fresh and intriguing.
The drama is titled The King: Eternal Ruler (also, translated at some places as The King: The Eternal Monarch, The King: Monarch of Eternity and The King: Forever Sovereign) and it is a fantasy romance where there are two parallel universes. One is the current Republic Of Korea while the other is an imperial Korea ruled by a King. Lee Min Ho and Kim Go Eun both play double roles — he is the detective in modern world while also the emperor. She plays a detective in modern world and a criminal in the royal world. The story unfolds as these characters try to keep the door closed between the two worlds. Phew, plot is definitely grand and fascinating.
The drama will start filming later this year and is slated to premiere in 2020. It is yet to announce the network on which it will air. It also reunites the writer with the PD of Descendants Of The Sun.
