Romantic Doctor, Teacher Kim was a huge hit when it premiered in 2016 (three years have flown like anything!) and it just arrived with its second season this week as the Monday-Tuesday drama on SBS. And what an arrival it is! The show has garnered super ratings — 10.8% and 14.9% for first day and then reaching upto 18% in its fourth episode (Source). Looks like it will soon match its predecessor as the original installment crossed 20% mark.
The central character for the drama is Teacher Kim who is a genius doctor with an eccentric personality. It is set in the Doldam Hospital. The earlier leads of Yoo Yeon Suk and Seo Hyun Jin are now replaced by Lee Sung Kyung, who is playing a doctor a second time after 2016’s Doctors and Ahn Hyo Seop, the charming actor from Thirty But Seventeen. She plays a second year resident cardiosurgeon while he plays a genius surgeon.
I’m not much into medical dramas, their episodic nature and hospital politics track just makes for a boring watch. But I’m curious to know why this particular show enjoys so much love! Other than the fact that the titular role is being played by the brilliant Han Suk Kyu. The PD-writer team is same as that of the first season — the screenwriter has also penned shows like Where Stars Land, What Happens to My Family? and Dalja’s Spring (one of my favorites!).
It’s definitely impressive to see a drama reach these kind of numbers these day, especially in its first week! I don’t usually do medical dramas either, but it’s good to see how successful it it 🙂
Yes, good to see dramas still getting high ratings! Because it seemed like a thing of the 2000s and before 😀
