April is here and with it comes a new stream of Korean dramas. It’s mostly a month for thrillers this time but there is also some sprinkling of drama and comedy. Let’s look at the list of Korean drama premieres of the month:
Taxi Driver
Network: SBS
Premiere Date: April 9
Stars: Lee Je Hoon, Esom
Slot: Friday & Saturday
Genre: Action, Crime
About: A mysterious taxi service that helps people get justice who couldn’t receive it legally.
Thoughts: The drama is based on a webtoon. I like the leads a lot and the story sounds interesting too.
Sell Your Haunted House / Great Real Estate
Network: KBS
Premiere Date: April 14
Stars: Jang Na Ra, Jung Yong Hwa
Slot: Wednesday & Thursday
Genre: Fantasy, Horror, Comedy
About: A real estate agent who is also an exorcist teams up with a con artist to solve a mystery
Thoughts: I’m getting Master’s Sun vibes from this one, being episodic and horror comedy. I do like the leads, so probably I’m gonna give this one a try.
Amor Fati
Network: SBS
Premiere Date: April 13
Stars: Choi Jung Yoon, Ahn Jae Mo
Slot: Monday to Friday
Genre: Romance
About: A woman who finds out about her husband’s affair and how she overcomes this difficult situation of despair.
Thoughts: It’s a daily drama, and the story sounds familiar too, in line with many daily soaps. But I do like the idea of a woman starting to being hopeful after finding out about her husband’s extramarital affair, and that her life is not restricted to that one bad marriage.
Dark Hole
Network: OCN
Premiere Date: April 24
Stars: Kim Ok Bin, Lee Joon Hyuk
Slot: Saturdays & Sundays
Genre: Thriller, Sci-Fi, Mystery
About: A group of survivors who fight mutants created when humans inhaled a mysterious smoke from a sinkhole.
Thoughts: The plot surely sounds new for a kdrama, it is more like that of a movie. I like the cast and I’m exited to see how the drama tackles this subject.
Law School
Network: JTBC & Netflix
Premiere Date: April 14
Stars: Kim Myung Min, Kim Bum, Ryu Hye Young, Lee Jung Eun
Slot: Wednesday & Thursday
Genre: Legal, Drama
About: The students and professors in the legal department of a university.
Thoughts: Kim Myung Min! I’m not the number one fan of legal dramas but the cast combination adds to my excitement for this show.
Undercover
Network: JTBC
Premiere Date: April 23
Stars: Ji Jin Hee, Kim Hyun Joo, Yun Woo Jin, Han Sun Hwa
Slot: Fridays & Saturdays
Genre: Thriller, Drama
About: A National Intelligence Service agent who gets married to a human rights lawyer while still hiding his true identity.
Thoughts: This is a remake of 2016 BBC series of the same name. The cast is solid, both the younger and older actors for the same characters. Interestingly, Ji Jin Hee worked with Kim Hyun Joo in 2015’s melodrama I Have A Lover, and Yeon Woo Jin and Han Sun Hwa were together in 2014’s rom-com Marriage Not Dating (which made me his fan!). This is not the first Korean remake of an English language show — we have seen and praised dramas like The Good Wife, Designated Survivor and Suits in the past.
I’ll give ‘Sell Your Haunted House’ a go one of these days. I’ve yet to find a kdrama that truly feels like my thing. Navilleira started out pretty good but the last couple of episodes were a bit too angsty for my taste. Hopefully that’s not the trend going forward.
I know what you mean for Navillera. I wish they hadn’t introduced the Dementia plot..it made things really sad. I do still love it though, let’s see how it is going forward.
Well, that dementia plot is also in the original webtoon, but I think it came along lot later in the story. I only gave a cursory glance to the webtoon though as I didn’t want to get too spoiled for the plot.
