Although I’m not a huge fan of horror-comedy dramas where a character can see ghosts and the couple solves different cases together in an episodic manner, I do give them a chance if I like the actors (like Master’s Sun). I’m happy to report that I thoroughly enjoyed the first two episodes of new tvN drama Spooky In Love, which stars Park Eun Bin (Age Of Youth, Castaway Diva) and Yang Se Jong (Still 17, Doona!) in the lead roles.

Park Eun Bin plays Cheon Yeo Ri, a rich woman who can see ghosts — with an added feature: the person she touches gets haunted by a ghost too. Yang Se Jong plays Ma Gang Uk, a prosecutor. They both cross paths while working on more than one case, she is there because a spirit requested her to help and he is there because he is trying to solve it as part of his job. They start on wrong foot but gradually they are beginning to warm up to each other. Also, we see multiple romantic falls and hero catching the heroine right on time — I always love these moments no matter how many times this mini trope is used: the eye contact and the touch! Swoon. The funny thing is she never allows him to hold her hand, leading to hilarious conclusions to this romance trope. So yeah, they have started to feel some bit of attraction too which they obviously have not yet realized.

The drama works at a good pace and nicely fuses the comedy with romance and case-of-the-day plot. The show is not scary despite the basic story about ghosts. It’s more about how the leads would deduce the solution than ‘who did it’ question.

I like the chemistry between Park Eun Bin and Yang Se Jong. I love that Ma Gang Uk is not broody and serious. He is a dedicated prosecutor who has his lighter moods. He is also someone who gets scared easily when it comes to anything ghostly (real or imaginary). People might compare Cheon Yeo Ri with Hotel del Luna‘s lead character, what with living in isolation due to her circumstances and being a rich heiress. But I appreciate that nothing is extreme when it comes to her personality. She is aloof and mostly no-nonsense in nature but she shows compassion and softness too.

The added feature where she can’t touch anyone adds to making this drama, particularly the romance, complex. I can’t wait to see how the love story unfolds.

We are also introduced to one more main character — Kang Min Hwan (Ong Seong Wu). He has known Yeo Ri for a long time but they were not in touch for few years. He is now back and wants to professionally connect with her, with an intention to connect personally as well. Right now, he seems like a villain to me who might act crazily if provoked. We will have to see!

All in all, I had a great time watching Spooky In Love and I look forward to see how the story unfolds.
