You would think since February is a shorter month, it would have lesser number of Korean drama premieres, compared to other months of the year. But dramaland is bringing a huge number of new dramas this February. So without further delay, let me list them here:
L.U.C.A.: The Beginning
Network: tvN
Premiere Date: February 1
Stars: Kim Rae Won, Lee Da Hee
Slot: Monday & Tuesday
Genre: Sci-fi, Thriller
About: A man with special abilities who does not remember anything and a violent crimes detective who is the only one who remembers him.
Thoughts: I really like Kim Rae Won — he was the first Korean actor I saw in anything (in the movie My Little Bride). Plus, I have good things to say about Lee Da Hee. The plot sounds interesting and I’m reading good things about its premiere episodes. And it has only 12 episodes!
River Where the Moon Rises
Network: KBS
Premiere Date: February 15
Stars: Kim So Hyun, Ji Soo, Lee Ji Hoon
Slot: Monday & Tuesday
Genre: Historical, Romance
About: A classic Goguryeo folktale about the love between Pyeonggang and On Dal.
Thoughts: First things first, the posters are gorgeous! Also, finally Ji Soo in a leading role! The drama reunites him with Kim So Hyun after 2016’s mini drama Page Turner. I think this show has the potential to be a beautiful and touching love story.
Hello? It’s Me! / Hello, Me!
Network: KBS & Netflix
Premiere Date: February 17
Stars: Choi Kang Hee, Kim Young Kwang, Lee Re
Slot: Wednesday & Thursday
Genre: Fantasy, Romance, Comedy
About: A disappointed and timid 37 year old woman who one day meets her 17 year old self who is full of life and hope.
Thoughts: The story piques my interest with the theme of how we change with time and life experiences. Though it is not new — Marry Him If You Dare had similar subject. The promos look cute and fun.
Vincenzo
Network: tvN
Premiere Date: February 20
Stars: Song Joong Ki, Jeon Yeo Bin, Taecyeon, Kwak Dong Yun
Slot: Saturday & Sunday
Genre: Comedy, Legal
About: The world of lawyers where a lawyer starts practicing for social cause after returning from Italy and meeting a tough female lawyer.
Thoughts: I love the cast and the show looks stylish. Also, it is penned by the writer of admired dramas like Good Manager (Chief Kim) and The Fiery Priest.
Sisyphus: The Myth
Network: JTBC & Netflix
Premiere Date: February 17
Stars: Jo Seung Woo, Park Shin Hye
Slot: Wednesday & Thursday
Genre: Sci-fi, Mystery, Thriller
About: A genius but eccentric engineer who one day finds out some truth about his brother’s mysterious death and and a powerful and gutsy warrior who travels through time and comes to save him.
Thoughts: Super excited for this one! I love Jo Seung Woo and although his role in the two seasons of Stranger (or Forest Of Secrets) is awesome, I’m ready to see him in a new character. I love Park Shin Hye and I’m looking forward to her action and bravado here. The plot sounds intriguing as well.
Beyond Evil
Network: JTBC
Premiere Date: February 19
Stars: Shin Ha Kyun, Yeo Jin Goo
Slot: Friday & Saturday
Genre: Thriller
About: A former detective who presently works as a sergeant and an elite detective transferred to the small city who investigate a serial murder resembling a 20 year old serial murder.
Thoughts: The serial murder case investigation has been used as a central theme in so many dramas and movies. But the characters and actors surely add the freshness factor. Also, the writer was attached to shows like Awl, Mad Dog and The Light In Your Eyes.
Miss Monte Cristo
Network: KBS
Premiere Date: February 15
Stars: Lee So Yeon, Choi Yeo Jin
Slot: Monday to Friday
Genre: Melodrama
About: A promising and aspiring fashion designer who vows revenge when she loses everything due to her friends’ betrayal.
Thoughts: Revenge melodramas are aplenty in dramaland but it’s also true that they make for an addicting and entertaining ride. This one is a daily soap.
Dear. M
Network: KBS
Premiere Date: February 26
Stars: Park Hye Soo, Jaehyun
Slot: Fridays
Genre: Romance
About: A search for M, an individual mentioned in an anonymous post on a college website and about two friends of 12 years.
Thoughts: You had me at ‘two leads who have been friends from 12 years’ coz I love friends-to-lovers trope. I also love that the drama is set in the college world, which is rare as we mostly have school dramas or workplace dramas. Bring on the breezy, youthful vibes!
Penthouse 2
Network: SBS
Premiere Date: February 19
Stars: Lee Ji Ah, Eugene, Kim So Yeon, Uhm Ki Joon
Slot: Friday & Saturday
Genre: Melodrama
About: The elite group of families living in a posh apartment complex in Gangnam.
Thoughts: This is the second season for the smash hit Penthouse that recently wrapped up its first installment. I haven’t seen it but have heard it’s a juicy makjang (over the top and larger than life drama) to enjoy.
Times
Network: OCN
Premiere Date: February 20
Stars: Lee Seo Jin, Lee Joo Young
Slot: Saturday & Sunday
Genre: Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Thriller
About: Two reporters who are five year apart but connected via a phone call, who try to prevent the death of South Korea President.
Thoughts: This is Kairos! With the difference being 5 years instead of 1 month and the person to be saved being the president. This is an OCN drama so surely this one would be darker and grittier.
Definitely lots of interesting dramas to choose from this month. River Where the Moon Rises is top of my list. Planning to check out several of the others too. I’ll be busy! 🙂
I’m not a huge sageuk fan (though I’m loving Mr. Queen right now :P) so River is not very high on my list. But it does look gorgeous, so I might check it out.
I just started LUCA 🙂
How’s it? I still need to start it 🙂
It’s good so far 🙂
