Now that the dust is settled on the plethora of premieres that were too overwhelming to receive at such a fast pace, it’s time to see how the rating chart has been shaken up. I don’t really believe that there is directly proportional relationship between a drama rating and its quality or how good it is (which is also subjective, especially in case of Kdramas), but it’s good to check out which cast and crew ruled the hearts of majority of domestic viewers — no small feat in this era of online viewing and multiple entertainment options. A completely pre-produced drama can have a double-edged sword as far as its promotion is concerned — since everything is ready, one gets a chance to show as much goodies as one can before the show hits the airwaves. On the other hand, there is a thing called too much publicity. Overall, I think it’s a positive step to film and complete dramas before they air. I totally rooted for [SPOILER ALERT] Kang Ji Hwan and Ham Eun Jung’s characters but it was actually a great thing the show did to subvert expectations and clichéd plotline by actually being a love story of two best friends. I’ve always said that there is a certain allure when stars who mostly work in films decide to visit dramaland once in a while. This time it’s Kim Joo Hyuk and Chun Woo Hee who will grace our screens and in a drama to be broadcast on — where else — everyone’s go-to channel tvN. The show is titled Argon and will be a newsroom drama. Kim Joo Hyuk has not done a drama since 2013’s long sageuk Gu Am Heo Joon. He did have a guest appearance in Reply 1988 and I liked him a lot there. Chun Woo Hee has done Continue reading →

I loved The Producers, overall and especially in its initial days when it experimented with a brand new format of mixing elements of drama and variety, a mockumentary style to tell its narrative. Unfortunately it dropped that style to fit in with the large audience’s demand. The broadcast network KBS thankfully wanted to bring this refreshing treatment back again and hence, we have that in the form of The Best Hit. It’s a new variety-drama starting on June 2 in a new slot of Fridays and Saturdays, the same one which was invented for The Producers and later dropped. Continue reading →
